New Solution for Rapid Building Map Tiles - Multitask Map Tiling

02 Jul,2018

Map tiling is an optimization strategy to improve user experience in map browsing. The popular online map services now, aimed to higher requirement to the browsing speed and concurrency, are using map tile technical to meet the browsing requirement. Multitask map tiling consists a series of map files in a certain scales and within a certain map area. It is organized as the pyramid structure, every tile can be specifically marked by rank or rank numbers. While translating or scaling maps, based on pyramid regulations, the browser can calculate the needed tiles, get and split them from tile servers.

With the development of Surveying and mapping technology, the volume of map data is becoming larger, and updates more frequently. Under general circumstances, the electronic vector map builds tiles for at least several days, and sometimes takes more than a month or even longer, which is far from meeting the actual application needs. How can map tiles be built rapidly?

SuperMap GIS 9D products provide a solution to this problem, that is multitask map tiling. Multitask map tiling is to split a "huge" tile task into multiple sub tasks, and open multiple processes. Each process automatically receives and executes the tangent sub tasks. Tile results can be saved to local storage, and also MongoDB database. (Figure 1)

Meanwhile, multitask map tiling not only supports the opening of multiple processes on one computer (that is, single machine multitask), but it also supports multiple processes in multiple computers to execute the task (that is, multi machines with multitasks).

The advantages of this multitask map tiling are as follows:

a. Stable with high-speed

Compared with the traditional single task process, this is more stable and high-speed.(Figure 2)

b. Automatic splitting of tasks without any manual operation.

When executing the multitask map tiling, the desktop product will automatically split the task according to the parameters such as the scale and the process status, without requiring any manual participation.

c. Dynamically adjust the number of processes and make rational use of computer resources.

During the process of multitask map tiling, the number of processes can be dynamically adjusted. If there is idle machine resources, the number of processes can be increased. On the other hand, if the machine resources are tense, the number of processes can be reduced. The computer resources can be used reasonably and effectively.

d. Control the process at anytime

Desktop products regularly refresh the progress of each scale, and supporting manual refresh.

e. Cross platform

The multitask map tiling in the SuperMap GIS 9D desktop product is based on the SuperMap iObjects Java. As the cross platform characteristics of the iObjects Java, the multitask map tiling can not only be executed in the Windows system, but also in the Linux system.
