GIS products will have wide range of applications in the era of spatial computing

Spatial computing and GIS will reinforce each other. GIS is an effective tool for managing and analyzing spatial data. The powerful spatial analysis function of GIS can be used to extract deeper thematic information and comprehensively enhance the utilization value of spatial data. Spatial computing gives GIS more complex spatial analysis capabilities, faster data processing capabilities, and a more intuitive and dynamic spatial data display method.

3D GIS helps build a virtual world and creates a spatio-temporal information base for spatial computing. The commercialization of spatial computing has promoted the vigorous development of the three-dimensional computer ecosystem based on spatial computing and penetrated into the field of 3D GIS. In recent years, the integration of 3D GIS technology and IT technology has greatly improved the integration of 3D data such as tilt, point cloud, and BIM with traditional multi-source data such as images, vectors, terrain data, fine models, underground pipelines, water surface data, and field data. The 3D solid data model has been developed to realize the modeling and expression of the 3D full space and enhance the realism and accuracy of the three-dimensional scenes. True three-dimensional analysis and distributed spatial computing has improved the interaction and visualization capabilities of three-dimensional scenes. The development of large-scale, high-precision urban space intelligent modeling technology facilitates the construction of digital spaces with outdoor and indoor integration, macro-micro integration, and above-ground and underground integration, achieving virtual reconstruction and three-dimensional presentation of the objective world.

Spatial computing + GIS has been applied in many fields. Spatial computing is a method to analyze and understand the world based on spatial data and models. From the perspective of technology itself, the combination with GIS technology will have greater potential in urban renewal, community governance, environmental remediation, urban simulation, and service disaster early warning and prevention.

01 Spatial Computing + Digital Twin: Means to Improve Intelligent Urban Management

Digital twin city built based on GIS, 3D real-life modeling and rendering technology is a digital world system that corresponds to the real world. In the past, digital twins focused on "visualization", and the application of spatial computing gives the digital twin a soul and makes it calculable and predictable, more intelligent and dynamic. Digital twins based on spatial computing will also have the capabilities of spatial perception, calculation, analysis and retrieva1, and can be applied to cities to build digital spatial intelligent management, truly realizing the transition from "seeing" to "using".

Digital twin cities combined with GIS has penetrated into multiple application scenarios:

In terms of smart transportation, relying on the technical advantages of real-time twins, traffic big data analysis, AI algorithms and other technical advantages, integrating dynamic and static traffic data and high-precision maps, multiple smart transportation systems can be built by building a full-space computable smart transportation digital twin base. It is an application system that realizes various applications such as traffic accident early warning and processing, public transportation dispatching and management, and traffic information services.

In terms of smart water conservancy, by accessing the underlying GIS and BIM data of digital twin water conservancy, business operations and IoT sensing data, and with the help of simulation and spatial computing platforms, intelligent management of various scenarios such as water resources management and allocation can be completed.

In terms of smart campus, by accessing IoT sensing devices, geospatial data, BIM data, and teaching business system data, combined with simulation technology and emergency evacuation algorithms, relying on digital twin modeling and spatial computing capabilities, multiple application scenarios can be realized including virtual restoration of campus scenes, safety and security management, comprehensive school situation management and so on.

02 Spatial computing derivative technology: accelerating GIS innovative applications

The "spatial computing layer" in the seven-layer architecture of the Metaverse concept has derived concepts such as 3D engines, VR/AR/MR equipment, and geographical information mapping, expanding the business scenarios of GIS in spatial computing.

GIS combining AI extended reality technology can superimpose images of the real environment and three-dimensional models of the virtual environment to provide users with a more realistic and three-dimensional geospatial experience. It can realize map visualization, mapping, positioning, intelligent analysis and other capabilities. Combined with GIS High-precision positioning, it can be used in underground pipeline inspections, holographic smart sand tables, urban public facilities management, real-time map navigation, immersive tours in exhibition halls, etc., thereby improving the efficiency of construction, management, maintenance, and inspections, simplifying work processes, and promoting intelligent construction.

With the support of spatial computing, GIS combined with AI technology has advantages that cannot be ignored in terms of data-driven, precise mapping and intelligent analysis and prediction. It realizes functions such as forecasting, early warning, previewing, and planning. With the help of VR/AR /MR equipment, it has even broadened the application field of GIS.

As a new wave of AI represented by large models is setting off a new industrial revolution, the development of spatial computing platforms will also enable the integration of virtuality and reality to generate more new interactive relationships and new interactive paradigms, which will provide a great opportunity for GIS. The field brings upgrades and changes in technology and tools, and brings various innovative content and applications in remote sensing image analysis, rendering modeling, intelligent interaction, etc., accelerating the realization of SuperMap’s vision—lighting up every corner of the world with geospatial intelligence".
