PHS Base Station Management GIS

Background

The characteristic of the data involved in the telecommunication industry is that the volume of it is very large and has close relation with the map, so using geography information system technology to manage the data will improve the level of telecommunication management effectively. Presently, with the development of PHS (Personal Handy Phone System) in Xiangfan (a city in HuBei province, China), the traditional way of manual management and mere database management cannot accommodate and meet the requirements of the construction and optimization work of the PHS network.

The PHS base station management GIS of Xiangfan adopts the homemade advanced component GIS platform-SuperMap Objects, uses the powerful spatial database engine of SuperMap-SDX to build graphics database, and overlaps layers with various geographic features to obtain a digital map. Also these data is associated with the attribute data in relational database, and the analysis of the data, text and graphics can be integrated to the one platform, so that the spatial information and attribute information can be managed together. The integration information, along with spatial analysis and models, makes PHS network construction operate more efficiently.

Overview of the functionality

1. The collection of base station information and telephone operation data of the base station

The information of base station and telephone operation data of the base station are stored in different tables in PHS network management database, and the telephone operation data table receives daily telephone operation data of each base station, but can only maintain in the past seven days, so it is very burdensome and inconvenient to do some statistical work or analysis on the base station data.

The PHS base station management GIS system can obtain data from the PHS network management database automatically, and update the base station data of the map according to the information in the database; For the telephone operation data, the system saves the data in the database every day, and analysis can be performed on data of any day, besides, the daily telephone operation data table can be exported to the file of required format.

2. Thematic mapping and printing

There is a digital map of the city in this system which is obtained by digitizing paper map, from which we can see the boundaries of all the districts in the city, residence, streets, buildings, road network and rivers and so on. Also the overview map is provided, so that you can browse and position on the map. After all the PHS base stations are located on the map as a layer, when you click any base station on the map, the attribute information of this PHS base station will be displayed in the attribute list.

In this system, various distribution maps can be made based on the attribute information, for example: The distribution map of geographic positions of base stations (as shown in figure 1), the distribution map of base station types, the distribution map of off-line ratio of the base stations, the distribution map of telephone operation volume. All the distribution maps support the browse operations such as zooming in, zooming out, panning etc. The map in the map window can be exported as layout. This system also provides powerful layout function, you can set the border of the map, scale, the label, art characters etc.

3. The real-time display of warning situation

The warning situation of the base stations changes all the time, by connecting to the PHS network management system, the GIS system can obtain the data of base stations, and keep pace with the warning data of the network management system. Besides, this system can display the warning situations of all the base stations in different colors. When clicking a warning base station, the warning reason and time will be displayed in the warning list, as shown in figure 2.

4. The analysis of the telephone operation data of the base station

The user can analyze the telephone operation volume, the telephone operation volume of calling sides, the telephone operation volume of individual base station. The 24-hour telephone operation curve map of all the base stations, calling sides and individual base station, which displays the movement trend of 24-hour telephone operation of the base station or base stations in the PHS network using trendline, and the 24-hour telephone operation list of all the base stations, which list the detailed data of the 24-hour telephone operation volume of all the base stations in PHS network, can be obtained in this system. Meanwhile, the system calculates various analysis data such as the time period of rush hour, the average telephone operation volume during rush hours. The figure 3 shows the rending map of telephone operation volume of the base stations.

5. The statistics and analysis of the problem base stations

Problem base station refers to the base station whose statistic index goes beyond the standard, and functions exceptionally. This system will represent these problem base stations in the form of report and thematic map according to the statistical analysis result to each index of the base station data. In addition, the condition query can be performed in this system, or you can get the telephone operation volume of certain period, for example one or three days, and export to Excel table then print the result. The figure 4 shows the statistical distribution map of frequency busy base station.

6. The management of analysis of malfunction

To perform statistical analysis on the malfunctions occur in all the base stations can get a picture of malfunctions situations in the PHS network, and will give reference to the decision making on the maintenance, location-picking of base stations etc.

7. Automatizing maintenance dispatching management

The PHS base station management GIS system lists the maintenance dispatching management as one of its functions, and can manage the maintenance dispatching procedure, find the base stations needs to be maintained at certain time interval, and print the maintenance form and the line order of base stations in order to give maintenance in time. When the system detect that the base station resume function after maintenance, it will inform the maintenance men which improve the efficiency.

8. The management of PHS facilities

The user can perform query on the distribution and quantity of the assets in many ways, for example, according to the region, type of facilities, situation of facilities, time period, alteration quantity, property right and so on, and the result can be displayed in various fashions. The change of the assets can also be tracked and obtained, so that the managers can get a picture of the wholeassets.

9. The management of logs

The on-duty work log, transfer log, maintenance log, complaint made by users and so forth can be recorded, printed, queried in this system.

Result

The PHS base station GIS management system applies to the management and maintenance of PHS nowadays. It integrates the view of logical parameters, statistical analysis and the output of various databases, not only improves the efficiency of the operation of the network, but also simplifies the routine work. Meanwhile, the building of related database provides advanced management method, avoids the assets being left unused and repeated construction, and saves the resources. Also, this system makes the construction of base stations easier and helps the management and decision-making people to make more applied and realistic plans based on the queried and statistic data.
