GIS in Big Data Era

16 Oct,2017

Data has been the fuel for the development in the recent years, we are also transforming from Information Technology to Data Technology era.

In our understanding, the GIS without big data support will finally vanish, and GIS with big data support will become a standard.

Taking a look at the development history of GIS, GIS has transformed many times due to technological revolution. From the earliest integration GIS based on Unix like Arc/Info to desktop GIS like MapInfo, and then the component GIS like SuperMap in 2000 and service GIS and cloud GIS to today’s big data GIS.

SuperMap research institue started the studies on the combination of big data and GIS 3 years ago and invested development 2 years ago. After the efforts of over 200 people, on 24th, August, SuperMap GIS 9D, big data platform software, has been released at the GTC 2017. SuperMap GIS upgraded from 8C to 9D, 8C represents cloud computing while 9D represents big data, which means the core GIS products of SuperMap is at big data era.

SuperMap GIS 9D embraces IT data technologies like Hadoop, Spark, fulfilling the holes of IT big data software in spatial analyisis, providing data analysis and digging ability for spatial dimension. Also, using big data distribution technology to improve GIS, improving the storage and analysis performance.

In big data era, SuperMap, as a GIS basic software provider, has the mission that to use IT big data technology to improve GIS and improved GIS provides massive amount of data storage and calculation.
