Stanley Ho Centre for Emerging Infections Diseases Select SuperMap GIS for Research on Infections Control

The Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, was established in October 2003 to conduct research and provide professional training in infectious diseases. The interdisciplinary groups of experts on epidemiology, microbiology, clinical medicine and health economics will contribute to infectious diseases. The medicine and health economic will contribute to infectious disease preparedness of society.


In recognition of a generous donation of HKD 25 Million from Dr. Stanley Ho. GBS.,  to support research on infectious diseases. The centre was renamed to Stanley Ho Centre for Emerging Infections Diseases on 15th November 2006.


In Hong Kong, amongst various infectious diseases, it has been estimated that up to 60 per 10,000 of the elderly population are hospitalized annually for the influenza-associated complications. The outbreak of SARS on 2003 demonstrated the thread. Researchers at the Stanley Ho Centre of Emerging Infectious Diseases realized that the high density and complex geo-social environment may be a cause. With the new funding, the Researcher in the center will induct the geo-spatial analysis capability of Geographic Information system to study the model of infections in Hong Kong and neighbor countries.


SuperMap GIS Suite is selected as one of the tools in the research on the model of infections and its control. The new temporal filter function in latest SuperMap 5.2 version help the Research on illustrating the spreading model of infections on map.
