What’s SuperMap Desktop GIS?
SuperMap Desktop GIS products are a set of Desktop GIS software developed based on SuperMap’s core technology with friendly interface, easy-to-use functionality in data browsing, editing, query as well as topology processing, 3D modeling and spatial analysis etc.
It consists of three products: SuperMap Viewer, SuperMap Express and SuperMap Deskpro with increasing functionality.
SuperMap Viewer - a free data Browser, mainly used for browsing map data generated by SuperMap GIS products.
SuperMap Express - a middle weight Desktop GIS of SuperMap. Comparing to SuperMap Deskpro, it contains all the functionalities except for 3D visualization and analysis, grid analysis, network analysis and layout.
SuperMap Deskpro – the professional desktop GIS products of SuperMap, specialized in spatial data viewing, authoring, managing, analyzing and mapping. It has almost all the GIS functions and is very easy to learn and use.

Roadmap of Desktop GIS Products
The following releases of SuperMap desktop GIS software have been launched - SuperMap Deskpro 3.0 in 2001, SuperMap 2003 desktop in 2003, SuperMap GIS 5.0 desktop in 2004, SuperMap GIS 5.2 desktop in 2006 and forthcoming SuperMap GIS 2008 desktop in 2007. The roadmap of our desktop products is illustrated below:

Technical Features
Open Architecture
SuperMap Desktop GIS products adopt an open architecture and support seamless access to the data stored in Oracle、Microsoft SQL Server、Sybase、DB2, King base etc. via SDX+ visual data engine.

The concept of plug-in abstraction layer is introduced in the desktop architecture; therefore, concrete implementation of each functional module is segregated from integrated desktop application environment, laying a solid foundation for rapid software upgrade in the future.

The desktop products with plug-in structure are able to give a rapid response to specific industry requirements by adding specific data model or business model plug-ins.

User Oriented UI Design
SuperMap Desktop GIS products have similar UI style and layout to Microsoft Office providing users with an optimal desktop settings and visual effects.
◆ Multi-view interface binding: The system intelligently switches to relevant menus and toolbars when switching between different windows, which improves working efficiency and makes operations more convenient.
◆ Different shortcuts for different types of spatial objects and operations to meet the needs of both professional and non-professional users, makes the processing of complicated spatial data smoothly.
◆ Customizable software interface layout to satisfy particular needs of users. The latest SuperMap Desktop GIS products have many interface styles for various choices.
Flexible and Convenient Operations
The operation style is similar to Windows standard style so that it is easy for users to grasp operation skills rapidly. A full consideration is given to different requirements for different level users, the operation wizard is suitable for beginners and shortcut keys and shortcut menus etc. for intermediate users, while advanced users can define shortcut keys etc. on their own.
In addition, SuperMap Desktop GIS products provide advanced users with advanced parameter settings and rich batch processing functions to improve automation and reduce operation difficulty.
Integration with SuperMap SDX+
SuperMap Desktop GIS products are integrated with the latest spatial database eXtension –SuperMap SDX/SDX+, which can directly store spatial data and attribute data integratedly into a large-scale database. Based on this, the products offer concurrent access to data, permission allocation, transaction management, and other advanced functions. Moreover, distributed and heterogeneous databases are fully supported by the desktop products and also multiple databases can be accessed simultaneously. These databases can have different logical structures and can also be run on different operating systems.
Powerful Map Editing Functionality
SuperMap Desktop GIS products take the advantage of the flexible editing features of CAD and also give considerations to the particularity of GIS data editing, thereby the editing manner of SuperMap desktop products is easy-to-use, accurate and of high efficiency. Moreover, the smart snapping technique (for details, please see the section Supreme Map Editing Function of Chapter 1) makes editing easier and more accurate.
The products contain attribute painter and style painter functions. The former can rapidly copy the specified attribute value of selected geometric objects to other objects, while the latter is able to copy style of selected geometric objects to other objects in CAD dataset.

In addition, SuperMap Desktop GIS products have semi-automatic tracking function for raster vectorization, which increases efficiency and precision of vectorization. Integration with Massive Data Management Technique
With this technique, massive image data management is easily implemented. GB level image data can be loaded in few minutes, when performing browsing operations such as zooming in/out, panning, it makes no difference whether you are operating GB level image data or a small volume of data in response time and display speed.
