SuperMap International Participated PhilGEOS 2023

19 Dec,2023

SuperMap International has participated in the recently concluded Philippine Geomatics Symposium 2023 (PhilGEOS 2023). It is one of the country’s premier gatherings of geomatics technology developers, researchers, professionals, users, and students. A pre-conference activity was held on December 5, 2023 at the National Engineering Center, located in University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City, where a workshop on the use of SuperMap software was attended by undergraduate and graduate students. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Jella Marie Maguale, GIS Developer of RASA Geomatics. She demonstrated her knowledge on generating models in 3D scene using the SuperMap iDesktopX software.

The conference proper was held on December 6-7, 2023 at the Institute of Biology Auditorium in University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City. This year, PhilGEOS focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a significant contribution to our society coupled with the continued pursuit of geospatial excellence. In her welcome message, the Co-chair of PhilGEOS 2023, Dr. Ayin M. Tamondong reminded the participants to “inspire collaborative thinking and innovative solutions, furthering our collective commitment to shaping a sustainable future through geospatial science.”

Distinguished plenary speakers from Norway, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan, namely, Dr. Hongchao Fan from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Dr. Laurence L. Delina from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Dr. Chi-Da John Wu from National Taiwan University, and Dr. Masashi Matsuoka from Tokyo Institute of Technology, shared their knowledge on the contributions of geomatics on respective areas of SDGs: urban environment, energy and environment, health, and sustainable cities.

One of the key highlights of the PhilGEOS 2023 is the display of 32 research posters of the students, in which the knowledge and talents of the geomatics students were showcased during the Poster Session. Parallel Technical Sessions were also held that took up much of the time of the 2-day conference. A total of 43 research teams participated and showcased their research papers during the Technical Sessions.

In between sessions and during break, the participants were also able to visit the booth of SuperMap. Students and professionals alike learned about the outstanding capabilities of the SuperMap software products family that can support them in future geospatial research and projects.

During the Industry Session, our very own Mr. Kevin Martin N. Cornejo, Business Development Officer for Asia and Oceania Center, delivered a company talk to introduce SuperMap, the company and the software. Mr. Cornejo showed to the participants the different GIS solutions that were achieved around the world in different industries with the help of SuperMap GIS technology. Of course, Mr. Cornejo also told them about the GIS solutions that were achieved in the Philippines using SuperMap GIS technology in the past few years: Project LUNGSOD of UP TCAGP, GEOMap Samar and Mapping of marine litters in Legazpi City. He shared also the goal of achieving more GIS solutions in the Philippines thru the partnership with RASA Surveying, the sole distributor of SuperMap GIS products in the Philippines. Since RASA Surveying is the largest surveying and GIS company in the country, with their high capability to do different surveying methods and techniques, this partnership will integrate other advanced technologies and data-driven systems in order to accomplish GIS solutions that will result in better resource management and services for the communities, thus achieving sustainable development.

Also, part of the participation of SuperMap in PhilGEOS is the privilege to give the SuperMap Best Paper Award. It was given to Ms. Raphaela Danica R. Dizon and Mr. Joedel J. Penales, with their research entitled “Real-time water level monitoring using low-cost GNSS receiver”. Their proud advisers are Dr. Rosalie B. Reyes and Engr. Luis Mabaquiao.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Czar Jakiri S. Sarmiento, the chairperson of UP Department of Geodetic Engineering, thanked all the participants and sponsors for supporting the successful symposium. The symposium was a great avenue for everyone to meet and learn with many contributors to the geomatics discipline. He also announced that the PhilGEOS will be back on 2025.
